Dave Andrew recently unveiled his 2nd album Re:covered
at a launch at Backyard in Hartamas. It consists of songs from the early to mid
1900′s. In his own words, he has looked back at this rich legacy to find songs
and reasons for covering them. A great
song stands the test of time but may occasionally need a new frock to show it
off again. RE:COVERED is a celebration of these songs and perhaps an attempt at
preserving their longevity, finding some new ears or refreshing some old ones
along the way.
Take for example “Summertime” by George
Gershwin
This beautiful aria that Clara sings
in the opening of Porgy and Bess has been covered 30,000 times. Although set in
South Carolina, Summertime for Andrews always conjured up New Orleans which is
funny as it was apparently inspired by a Ukrainian lullaby. Does the world need
another cover? Featuring the legendary New Orleans treasure Charlie Gabriel, it
just may do.
This is an awesome album combining easy listening interspersed with a surreptitious history lesson in early music. Highly recommended.
